Shane Smith

Hello, my name is Shane Smith; I’m an experienced, qualified Systemic Counsellor (BSc Hons) working towards a level 7 post-graduate diploma in Systemic Practice in Psychotherapy at the Family Institute within the University of South Wales. I’m also a bereavement counsellor having trained and volunteered for a number of years with Cruse Bereavement Care and I’m a student mentor at the University of South Wales. I’m a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) with my counselling practice being professionally supervised in-line with the BACP’s recommendations.

I’m a dedicated professional counsellor who is passionate about mental health and well-being. My counselling practice promotes client-centeredness by empowering people to be able to make changes that fit with their own personal values. My counselling approach is highly relational, offering a warm, empathic, and non-judgemental attitude.

I integrate ideas from a variety of schools of thought – based upon the premise that different people need different things at different times in their life; in my opinion this reflects person-centred practice and flexibility. Additionally, my practice draws from ‘third-wave’ Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies – in particular, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic ideas. I also integrate ideas from Transactional Analysis which are really useful for understanding inter-personal relationships, offering clients scope for growth and improvement within relationships, both with self and others.

My approach aims to see the wider picture or contexts that we live within, expanding from individuals into relational systems. These ‘systems’ will include relationships with ourselves, our friends, our families, work-place settings, and our environments. I view people as unique individuals with the potential for growth; it will be my aim to ‘collaborate’ with you in order to achieve this in a way which promotes choice and autonomy.

Thank you for reading my profile!
